The hospital was designed as part of a larger precinct with the CTICC and is integrated into the surrounding urban landscape focused on Hamilton Naki square. It is a 350-bed hospital with associated consulting rooms, wards and theatres. The public spaces are light filled volumes featuring artwork inspired by the work and life of Chris Barnard. There are offices on the First floor as well as a large Virgin Active gym dynamically overlooking the freeway. The ground floor is a mixed-use commercial and public space. As a commercial project with a fixed planning envelope, the building had to be shaped by many programme components while ensuring clarity and comfort in its user experience. The building also incorporates best practice regarding building services and sustainable design and operations, with a double ventilated skin, water harvesting and other efficiencies.
